The Stones in the Road Blanket is knit with super bulky weight yarn so it is quick to knit on big needles. The knitting pattern includes instructions for six blanket sizes.

The name for the Stones in the Road Blanket was inspired by a long bike ride on the Katy Trail in Missouri. The flat, straight, crushed stone trail follows a former railroad track.

DIRECTIONS FOR BLANKET SIX SIZES:
Approximate sizes after blocking…

Baby: 29” wide x 29” long
Small (Crib/Lap): 35” wide x 39” long
Medium: 37.75” wide x 46.5” long
Large: 41.25” wide x 51.5” long
XL: 49” wide x 59” long
XXL: 53.5” wide x 61.5” long

Any of the blanket sizes may be made longer by adding pattern repeats. Each pattern repeat adds about 2.5” to the length of the blanket. Pattern includes estimates for additional yardage needed to make blankets longer.

SUPER BULKY #6 WEIGHT YARN:

Baby: 350 - 370 yards
Small (Crib/Lap): 550 - 590 yards
Medium: 740 - 770 yards
Large: 880 - 930 yards
XL: 1170 - 1270 yards
XXL: 1450 - 1550 yards

For yarn suggestions… see my blog post about super bulky yarns for blanket knitting.

The texture of the pattern will show up best with solid color yarns.

You may also experiment with knitting two strands of bulky or worsted weight yarn together…remember you will need about twice as much yardage!

Be sure to buy additional yarn if you plan to add length to your blanket.

If you prefer worsted weight yarn…please see my Northern Trail blanket knitting pattern.

GAUGE:

Stockinette stitch with US size 13 needles: approximately 9 stitches & 12 rows = 4”

Exact gauge is not essential.

I used US size 13 knitting needles…but choose the needle size that gives the best appearance with your yarn and your knitting tension.

Significantly different gauge may require more yarn.

NEEDLES:

Knit flat, in one piece, back and forth on circular knitting needles.

In order to accommodate the large number of stitches, long circular needles are recommended.

SKILL LEVEL: Easy

You will need to know how to cast on stitches, knit and purl confidently, read a row by row knitting pattern, bind off stitches and weave in ends.

Blocking of finished knitting is recommended.

This pattern is written in English using standard U.S. knitting terms.

Written pattern with row by row instructions.
