The Time to Time striped blanket is knit entirely in garter stitch using worsted #4 weight yarn and US 8 knitting needles. It’s easy to knit and beginner friendly! Make this striped blanket one-of-a-kind by picking your favorite yarn colors.

This pattern uses only garter stitch so it’s perfect for beginners or confident knitters who enjoy a relaxing project.

The name for this pattern is inspired by simple things that are fun to do from time to time such as

  • going to a museum

  • trying a new hobby

  • playing a card game

  • watching an old movie

  • tackling a jigsaw puzzle

  • rereading a favorite book

  • visiting a park or botanical garden

  • stopping at a yarn store on a road trip

  • serving a build-your-own ice cream sundae bar

  • baking cookies using a new recipe (or a favorite old recipe)

DIRECTIONS FOR LARGE THROW BLANKET:
Large Throw Blanket = 42” wide x 53” long

To make blanket longer purchase more of Color A (shown in blue in photos).  Work a couple more rows for bottom and top stripes and add desired number of extra inches for large center stripe (blue).  Each additional 2” of length requires approximately 80 yards.

FIVE COLORS OF WORSTED #4 WEIGHT YARN:

This striped blanket pattern features five colors of worsted #4 weight yarn yarn. (Knit single strand.)

I used Berroco Vintage worsted #4 weight yarn in Twilight (medium heathered blue), Smoke (medium heathered gray), Charcoal (dark heathered gray), Mochi (white) and Jalapeno (heathered teal).

Color A: 1050 - 1090 yards = 5 skeins of Berroco Vintage
Color B: 430 - 436 yards = 2 skeins of Berroco Vintage
Color C: 160 - 165 yards = 1 skein of Berroco Vintage
Color D: 160 - 165 yards = 1 skein of Berroco Vintage
Color E: 400 - 410 yards = 2 skeins of Berroco Vintage

TOTAL: 2200 - 2266 yards = 11 skeins of Berroco Vintage

This large striped blanket requires 11 skeins of Berroco Vintage. Each skein of yarn contains 218 yards. The project is designed to use the yardage as efficiently as possible so there’s minimal leftover yarn.

When selecting your five color choices for this striped blanket… consider using: two medium, one dark and two light colorways. For a more subtle effect choose a combination of five light to medium colorways. And, for a bold appearance choose a combination of five medium to dark colorways. For more color combination ideas see my blog post about this blanket.

If you prefer to use only four yarn colors… use the same yarn color for A and E.

See the full selection of beautiful Berroco Vintage colorway options available at The Yarnery (St. Paul, Minnesota), Jimmy Beans Wool, Knit Picks or at many local yarn shops.

This pattern will also work nicely with many other worsted #4 weight yarns including: Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling, Lion Brand Heartland, Lion Brand Wool-Ease and Knit Picks Swish Worsted

GAUGE:
Garter stitch with US size 8 needles: 18 sts & 34 rows (17 garter ridges) = 4”

Take time to check gauge. A different gauge may require more (or less) yarn and impact finished size.

KNITTING NEEDLES:

Blanket is knit flat, in one piece on US size 8 circular knitting needles. Circular needles that are about 28” - 40” in length will work well.

SKILL LEVEL: Easy

You will need to know how to cast on stitches, knit confidently, read a knitting pattern written in English using standard US knitting terms, and bind off stitches. See by blog post for tips on weaving in ends.
