This blanket is knit with super bulky yarn on big needles. The design features an easy to remember 8-row repeat pattern and a seed stitch border.

The name for the Flint Hills Blanket is inspired by the Flint Hills area in the east central portion of Kansas…my home state. The area is known for the largest intact tallgrass prairie in North America. Often the state of Kansas is assumed to be perfectly flat terrain, but the east central portion of Kansas is full of beautiful rolling hills.

DIRECTIONS FOR FIVE BLANKET SIZES:
Approximate sizes after blocking…

XL: 47.5” wide x 54.5” long
Large: 40” wide x 49.5” long
Medium: : 37.5” wide x 47” long
Small: 35” wide x 37” long
Baby: 30” wide x 32” long

Any of the blanket sizes may be made longer by adding pattern repeats. Each pattern repeat adds about 2.75” to the length of the blanket. Pattern includes estimates for additional yardage needed to make blankets longer.

SUPER BULKY #6 WEIGHT YARN:

XL: 1150 - 1250 yards
Large: 820 - 900 yards
Medium: 690 - 740 yards
Small: 520 - 560 yards
Baby: 380 - 410 yards

This pattern will work well with many super bulky weight yarns. I used Lion Brand Hometown in the ‘Aspen Tweed’ colorway for the beige blanket and the green blanket was made with Loops & Threads Cozy Wool (discontinued) in the ‘Thunder’ colorway. The pattern will also work well with Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick or Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick & Quick.

If you prefer worsted weight yarn please see my Stay on the Ridge blanket pattern.

Be sure to buy additional yarn if you plan to add length to your blanket.

The texture of the pattern will show up best with solid color yarns.

KNITTING NEEDLES:

I used US size 13 circular knitting needles 38” in length for larger blankets. In order to accommodate the large number of stitches, long circular needles are highly recommended.

SKILL LEVEL: Easy for a confident knitter

You will need to know how to cast on stitches, knit and purl confidently, read a row by row knitting pattern, bind off stitches and weave in ends.

Blocking of finished knitting is recommended.

This pattern uses standard U.S. knitting terms.

Written pattern with row by row instructions.
