Welcome! I’m Mary Lee… the knitter and designer behind Fifty Four Ten Studio. I have been knitting, sewing and crafting since I was about eight years old. I published my first knitting pattern in 2013 and my collection now includes more than 70 designs. Fifty Four Ten Studio is named for the house number of the home my grandparents purchased when my mother was a young girl.

Around the Room: Modern Reversible Blanket Knitting Pattern

Around the Room: Modern Reversible Blanket Knitting Pattern

The Around the Room blanket knitting pattern features an 18-row repeat that creates a reversible geometric texture using only knit and purl stitches.  The easy-to-knit, predictable stitch pattern makes this a relaxing project.

This modern blanket design is a wonderful choice for knitting baby blankets, throws, and afghans.

Designed for worsted #4 weight yarn, the pattern can also be easily adapted for #3 weight yarns.

Smooth, solid-color yarns with good stitch definition will showcase the texture best. The pattern may also be used with gently variegated hand-dyed yarns.

The PDF knitting pattern includes instructions for six blanket sizes including: baby blanket, large throw and afghan.

REVERSIBLE BLANKET KNITTING PATTERN:

Here’s a look at both sides of this reversible blanket design…

Around the Room blanket is reversible! The pattern looks the same on both sides. It’s easy to knit with worsted #4 weight yarn.

INSPIRATION FOR THE PATTERN NAME:

The geometric stitch pattern featured in this design reminds me of special moments shared around the room with family and friends…

  • singing “Happy Birthday” together

  • reminiscing about favorite memories

  • showering a bride with heartfelt wishes

  • meeting a new baby for the very first time

  • helping a loved one settle into a new home

  • celebrating parents-to-be at a baby shower

  • sharing old stories with new family members

  • gathering around the table for a holiday meal

  • toasting a happy couple on their wedding day

  • watching a favorite movie on a quiet Friday night

Some of life’s most meaningful moments happen simply by being together in the same room.  Take a moment to look around the room and appreciate the time together.

I’m thrilled with how this blanket design turned out! The modern, geometric stitch pattern is completely reversible.

Below is a close up look at the stitch pattern. A yarn with great stitch definition makes the pattern “pop”!

An easy to knit 18-row repeat stitch pattern creates this geometric, reversible design. The pattern uses only knit and purl stitches.

I used Berroco Pima 100 worsted #4 weight yarn in the ‘Wisteria’ colorway. I purchased this yarn last fall at The Yarnery - a fabulous yarn shop in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Shop for Berroco Pima 100 on The Yarnery website. Or, look for it at many local yarn shops.

EASY BLANKET KNITTING PATTERN:

This pattern is easy to knit for a confident knitter.

The 18-row repeat pattern uses only knit and purl stitches.

Experienced knitters will find it easy to get comfortable with the predictable pattern. This is a great project for TV knitting!

You will need to know how to cast on stitches, knit and purl confidently, read a row by row knitting pattern, bind off stitches and weave in ends.

Around the Room blanket is knit in one piece, back and forth on long circular knitting needles.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR SIX BLANKET SIZES:

This blanket pattern, like almost all of my blanket knitting patterns, offers lots of size choices so you can select the size that fits your project needs.

Approximate sizes using light worsted weight yarn, after blocking...

Baby Blanket: 26” wide x 30” long
Small Blanket: 30” wide x 35” long
Medium Blanket: 34.5” wide x 37” long
Large Throw: 39.5” wide x 44.5” long
XL Throw: 44” wide x 49.5” long
XXL Afghan: 49” wide x 54.5” long

The blanket shown in the photos is the small size and measures approximately 30” wide x 35” long after blocking.

Finished size may vary depending on yarn weight and gauge used.

Any of the sizes may be made longer by adding pattern repeats. Each pattern repeat adds about 2.25” - 2.5” to the length of the project. Pattern includes estimates for additional yardage needed to make each size longer.

Around the Room blanket knitting pattern is very easy to knit with worsted #4 weight yarn. The sample shown here is the small size and measures approximately 30” wide x 35” long.

WORSTED #4 WEIGHT YARN:

Baby Blanket: 750 - 780 yards
Small Blanket: 1000 - 1030 yards
Medium Blanket: 1250 - 1300 yards
Large Throw: 1700 - 1750 yards
XL Throw: 2100 - 2200 yards
XXL Afghan: 2600 - 2700 yards

For the blanket shown in the photos, I made the small size blanket using a little less than five skeins of Berroco Pima 100 light worsted #4 weight yarn in the ‘Wisteria’ colorway.

Finished size and amount of yarn needed may vary depending on yarn choice and gauge.

MORE ABOUT YARN OPTIONS:

Berroco Pima 100 is a 100% cotton that has a lovely matte finish. This unmercerized cotton yarn is available in 46 attractive colorways. The stitch definition is fantastic!

I used Berroco Pima 100 cotton yarn in the ‘Wisteria’ colorway that I purchased at The Yarnery in St. Paul, Minnesota. This was the first time I used Pima 100 yarn and I’m thrilled with the results. One thing to know is that this yarn is on the lighter side of the #4 worsted category. I used US 6 knitting needles for the sample project.

Berroco Pima 100 is categorized as worsted #4 weight… but it is on the lighter side of the #4 category of yarns. I used US 6 knitting needles and my gauge was about 20 stitches = 4 inches in the pattern stitch.

This pattern will work well with many worsted #4 weight yarns in a variety of fibers.

This pattern would also work nicely with many #3 weight yarns.

The stitch pattern will show up best with solid color or gently variegated hand-dyed yarns.

GAUGE:

Pattern stitch with US size 6 needles: approximately 20 stitches & 30 rows = 4”

Exact gauge is not essential. However, keep in mind that a different gauge will impact the size of the finished project and may require more (or less) yarn.

This stitch pattern will look best with fairly tight stitches.

If your gauge has fewer than 20 stitches per 4 inches… the blanket will turn out larger than the dimensions noted in the pattern.

If your gauge has more than 20 stitches per 4 inches…. the blanket will turn out smaller than the dimensions noted in the pattern.

I used Berroco Pima 100 yarn in the ‘Wisteria’ colorway for this design. The blanket is knit flat, in one piece on circular knitting needles. This pattern uses only knit and purl stitches.

KNITTING NEEDLES:

I used US size 6 knitting needles.

Choose the needle size that gives the best appearance with your yarn and your knitting tension. This design will look best with fairly tight stitches.

The blanket is knit flat in one piece, back and forth on long circular knitting needles in order to accommodate the number of stitches. Click here to read more about this topic on my blog post.

These days my favorite knitting needles are ChiaoGoo Twist Red Lace interchangeable knitting needles with 5” needle tips. This interchangeable knitting needle set is outstanding!

BLOCKING HIGHLY RECOMMENDED:

For best appearance, blocking of finished knitting is highly recommended.  The appearance of the blanket improved substantially after blocking.

Thank you so much for your interest in my knitting patterns.

Happy knitting!
