Once Again: Reversible Blanket Knitting Pattern for Worsted #4 Weight Yarn

Once Again: Reversible Blanket Knitting Pattern for Worsted #4 Weight Yarn

Once Again blanket is a modern, geometric blanket knitting pattern featuring a repeating square-inside-a-square design. Fully reversible, the blanket looks the same on both sides.

The 24-row repeat stitch pattern uses only knit and purl stitches. The easy-to-knit, predictable stitch pattern makes this a relaxing project. It is knit in one piece with a built-in garter stitch border.

The PDF knitting pattern includes instructions for six blanket sizes including: baby blanket, large throw and afghan. Makes a thoughtful gift for a new baby, or a lightweight throw to enjoy season after season.

The stitch pattern shows best in a solid-color worsted #4 weight yarn with good stitch definition. The pattern can also be easily adapted for #3 weight yarns.

Smooth, solid-color yarns with good stitch definition will showcase the texture best.

REVERSIBLE BLANKET KNITTING PATTERN:

Here’s a look at both sides of this reversible blanket design…

Once Again blanket is reversible! The pattern looks exactly the same on both sides. It’s easy to knit with worsted #4 weight yarn or #3 weight yarn.

INSPIRATION FOR THE PATTERN NAME:

Every fall, I bake pumpkin bread using a recipe from my childhood. And every Thanksgiving I make pumpkin pie using a recipe that’s over 100 years old, handed down from my husband’s great-grandmother. These are two of my favorite fall traditions that I look forward to once again each year.

The repeating geometric pattern in this blanket makes me think of seasonal rituals and annual traditions that are repeated once again from year to year…

  • planting summer flowers

  • growing favorite vegetables in the garden

  • returning to a favorite vacation spot

  • celebrating birthdays together

  • reuniting with family at annual events

  • walking through crunchy leaves that have fallen to the ground

  • preparing a holiday meal using old family recipes

  • listening to holiday songs that bring back memories

  • toasting the new year

Some traditions are big celebrations. Others are quiet, ordinary moments. Each one is something to enjoy once again.

The 24-row geometric stitch pattern is easy to knit and completely reversible.

I used Berroco Modern Cotton worsted #4 weight yarn in the ‘Warbler’ colorway. This yarn has great stitch definition which shows off the geometric stitch pattern beautifully. The yarn was purchased at Haus of Yarn - a fabulous yarn shop in Nashville, Tennessee.

Shop for Berroco Modern Cotton on the Haus of Yarn website. Or, look for it at many local yarn shops.

EASY BLANKET KNITTING PATTERN:

This pattern is easy to knit for a confident knitter.

The 24-row repeat pattern uses only knit and purl stitches.

Experienced knitters will find it easy to get comfortable with the predictable pattern.

You will need to know how to cast on stitches, knit and purl confidently, read a row by row knitting pattern, bind off stitches and weave in ends.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR SIX BLANKET SIZES:

This blanket pattern, like almost all of my blanket knitting patterns, offers lots of size choices so you can select the size that fits your project needs.

Approximate sizes using light worsted weight yarn, after blocking...

Baby Blanket: 27” wide x 29.5” long
Small Blanket: 30.5” wide x 33” long
Medium Blanket: 34” wide x 36.5” long
Large Throw: 40” wide x 47” long
XL Throw: 47” wide x 54” long
XXL Afghan: 50” wide x 61” long

The blanket shown in the photos is the small size and measures approximately 30.5” wide x 33” long after blocking.

Finished size may vary depending on yarn weight and gauge used.

Any of the sizes may be made longer by adding pattern repeats. Each pattern repeat adds about 3.5” to the length of the project. Pattern includes estimates for additional yardage needed to make each size longer.

Once Again blanket knitting pattern is very easy to knit with worsted #4 weight yarn. The sample shown here is the small size and measures approximately 30.5” wide x 33” long.

WORSTED #4 WEIGHT YARN:

Baby Blanket: 750 - 780 yards
Small Blanket: 950 - 980 yards
Medium Blanket: 1180 - 1230 yards
Large Throw: 1800 - 1850 yards
XL Throw: 2400 - 2500 yards
XXL Afghan: 2900 - 3000 yards

For the blanket shown in the photos, I made the small size blanket using about 4.5 skeins of Berroco Modern Cotton light worsted #4 weight yarn in the ‘Warbler’ colorway.

Finished size and amount of yarn needed may vary depending on yarn choice and gauge.

MORE ABOUT YARN OPTIONS:

Berroco Modern Cotton is a blend of 60% Pima Cotton and 40% Modal Rayon. This ‘light’ worsted #4 weight yarn has a touch of sheen giving it a polished, modern appearance. This cotton blend yarn is available in 54 attractive colorways. The stitch definition is fantastic!

I used Berroco Modern Cotton in the ‘Warbler’ colorway that I purchased at Haus of Yarn in Nashville, Tennessee.

Berroco Modern Cotton is categorized as worsted #4 weight… but it is on the lighter side of the #4 category of yarns. I used US 6 knitting needles and my gauge was about 20 stitches = 4 inches in the pattern stitch.

This pattern will work well with many worsted #4 weight yarns in a variety of fibers.

This pattern would also work nicely with many #3 weight yarns.

The stitch pattern will show up best with solid color yarns.

If you are looking for yarn suggestions… see my blog post about more than 25 worsted #4 weight yarns for blanket knitting.

GAUGE:

Pattern stitch with US size 6 needles: approximately 20 stitches & 28 rows = 4”

Exact gauge is not essential. However, keep in mind that a different gauge will impact the size of the finished project and may require more (or less) yarn.

This stitch pattern will look best with fairly tight stitches.

If your gauge has fewer than 20 stitches per 4 inches… the blanket will turn out larger than the dimensions noted in the pattern.

If your gauge has more than 20 stitches per 4 inches…. the blanket will turn out smaller than the dimensions noted in the pattern.

KNITTING NEEDLES:

I used US size 6 knitting needles.

Based on my experience, Berroco Modern Cotton is on the lighter side of the #4 worsted category. Before casting on for the sample project, I did some test knitting with a couple needle sizes. I preferred the results with US 6 knitting needles. However, it’s always a good idea to do some test knitting of your own to decide which needle size gives the best appearance with your yarn and knitting tension.

Keep in mind that the stitch pattern will look best with fairly tight stitches.

The blanket is knit flat in one piece, back and forth on long circular knitting needles in order to accommodate the number of stitches. Click here to read more about this topic on my blog post.

These days my favorite knitting needles are ChiaoGoo Twist Red Lace interchangeable knitting needles with 5” needle tips. This interchangeable knitting needle set is outstanding!

BLOCKING HIGHLY RECOMMENDED:

For best appearance, blocking of finished knitting is highly recommended.  The appearance of the blanket improved substantially after blocking.

COZY FALL SEASON:

As the days turn cooler here in Kansas City, I’m thinking about all the things to look forward to in the last few weeks of the year. In addition to baking using old family recipes, knitting and reading by the fireplace are also near the top of the list.

If you are in search of a good read, two books I enjoyed reading this year are:

The Whalebone Theatre by Joanna Quinn - The setting is an old English manor house by the sea in the 1920s. The young children of the house make a discovery on the beach that sparks a creative activity. The novel follows their lives into adulthood as they navigate the challenges of the war. Beautifully written! Get more details and buy the book on Bookshop.com.

The Road to Tender Hearts by Annie Hartnett - A charming, quirky story of a man who unexpectedly finds himself as guardian of two young children. He takes the kids, and a cat named “Pancakes”, on a cross-country road trip in hopes of reuniting with a high school crush. Humorous and heartwarming! Get more details and buy the book on Bookshop.com.

Thanks for reading! And, thank you for your interest in my knitting patterns!

Happy knitting!
