INSPIRATION FOR THE PATTERN NAME:

The name for this pattern is inspired by enjoying here & now… appreciating the present moment:

  • a birthday lunch at an outdoor café

  • the first snowfall of the winter season

  • and quiet evenings at home watching baseball or reading a good book.

This wonderfully cozy hand knit blanket is sure to be part of delightful moments… enjoying here & now

This striped blanket is knit entirely in garter stitch. It’s a great project for beginners! You only need to know “the knit stitch”! Purchase the PDF pattern here on my website or on Ravelry.

KNIT A LARGE THROW:

The PDF knitting pattern has instructions for a large throw which measures approximately 42” wide x 53” long.

To make blanket longer purchase more of Color A (shown in darker blue stripes at top, bottom and center of blanket in photos).  Work a couple more rows for bottom and top stripes and add desired number of extra inches for wide center stripe.  Each additional 2” of length requires an additional 65 - 68 yards (approximately 1/2 skein of Lion Brand Hue & Me).  See more details in the PDF pattern.

LION BRAND HUE & ME BULKY YARN:

This striped blanket pattern features five colors of Lion Brand’s Hue & Me (80% acrylic / 20% wool) bulky #5 weight yarn.

I’m thrilled with how Lion Brand Hue & Me yarn worked for this project! The stitch definition is fantastic. The finished blanket has a pleasing, substantial texture. This yarn creates a wonderfully cozy hand knit blanket.

Lion Brand Hue & Me is available in an attractive collection of colorways which coordinate beautifully together. This yarn is machine washable and dryable.

AMOUNT OF YARN NEEDED:

This project requires 11 skeins of Lion Brand Hue & Me in five colorways:

Color A: 670 - 685 yards = 5 skeins of Lion Brand Hue & Me

Color B: 270 - 274 yards = 2 skeins of Lion Brand Hue & Me

Color C: 130 - 137 yards = 1 skein of Lion Brand Hue & Me

Color D: 130 - 137 yards = 1 skein of Lion Brand Hue & Me

Color E: 270 - 274 yards = 2 skeins of Lion Brand Hue & Me

TOTAL: 1470 - 1507 yards = 11 skeins of Lion Brand Hue & Me

This blanket project is designed to use 11 skeins of Hue & Me yarn efficiently so there’s minimal leftover yarn. Project is knit single strand.

See the full selection of Lion Brand Hue & Me colorway options on LionBrand.com. This yarn is also available on Amazon and Crochet.com.

I used Hue & Me in “Marine” (bottom wide stripe), “Whisper” (light gray), “Smoke” (charcoal gray), “Salt” (off white) and “Harbor” (gray blue). See the full selection of Lion Brand Hue & Me colorway options on LionBrand.com. Purchase the PDF pattern here on my website or on Ravelry.

FIVE YARN COLORS OF HUE & ME:

For the sample blanket shown in the photos I used:

Color A: Marine #111U (5 skeins)
Color B: Whisper #121P (2 skeins)
Color C: Smoke #151Z (1 skein)
Color D: Salt #1098AS (1 skein)
Color E: Harbor #106BH (2 skeins)

There are unlimited color combinations that will work for this chunky striped blanket pattern! When selecting your five color choices for this striped blanket consider using: two medium, one dark and two light colorways.

For a more subtle appearance choose a combination of five light to medium colorways.

For a bold appearance choose a combination of five medium to dark colorways.

If you prefer to use only four yarn colors… use the same yarn color for A and E.

See some color combination suggestions below!

YARN COLOR COMBINATIONS:

Make this striped blanket one-of-a-kind by picking your five favorite yarn colors. Select the colorways that suit your home décor style! If you like, assign your favorite colorway to be Color A so it will be the dominant color in the blanket. Color A is used for the bottom, top and wide middle stripes.

Lion Brand Hue & Me bulky yarn is currently available in a selection of 29 attractive colorways. Here are a few ideas for yarn color combinations using Lion Brand Hue & Me yarn:

SWITCH ONE COLOR:

I knit up a sample to show how much the appearance changes when switching just one color. In the sample below… I used “Toast” (a medium khaki brown) instead of “Whisper” (light stone) for Color B.

I knit a small sample to show how much the appearance changes when switching just one color. The “Toast” colorway works nicely as a contrast with “Marine” (darker blue) and “Harbor” (medium gray blue). Purchase the PDF pattern here on my website or on Ravelry.

NEUTRALS WITH A LITTLE BLUE:

In this set of five colorways I started with the five colors I used for the sample blanket and changed Color E to “Toast” (far right).

These Hue & Me colorways are “Smoke”, “Marine”, “Whisper”, “Salt” and “Toast”. See the full selection of Hue & Me bulky yarn on the Lion Brand website.

NEUTRALS WITH A LITTLE GREEN:

In this collection, I changed just one color from the photo above… but the look changes quite a bit! If you like a pale, soft green… the “Artichoke” colorway is very appealing.

Lion Brand Hue & Me colors shown here are “Smoke”, “Artichoke”, “Whisper”, “Salt” and “Toast”.

BRING IN MUSTARD:

Here’s another small change that has a fun result! The “Mustard” colorway is a bit of “pop” among the neutral colorways.

These Lion Brand Hue & Me colorways are: “Smoke”, “Mustard”, “Whisper”, “Salt” and “Toast”.

AND A FEW OTHER COMBOS TO CONSIDER:

Denim blue as the main color: “Magic Hour” (denim blue), “Sea Glass” (turquoise), “Salt”, “Whisper” and “Smoke”.

Earthy tones: “Fatigues” (a darker, dusty olive green), “Terra”, “Salt”, “Smoke” and “Whisper”.

Fall inspired: “Saffron” (dusty brick orange), “Mustard” (golden yellow), “Toast”, “Whisper” and “Smoke”.

The possibilities are endless! Have fun picking the color combination that appeals to you!

See all of my knitting patterns here on my website or on Ravelry.

KNITTING NEEDLES:

The blanket is knit flat, in one piece on US 10.5 circular needles, 28” - 40” in length (or needle size necessary to obtain gauge). Circular knitting needles are necessary to accommodate the large number of stitches for a large blanket. Read my blog post on this topic if you need more information.

My favorite circular knitting needles are Knitter’s Pride Nova Platina metal circular needles. Here’s a link to a set of US 10.5 circular needles that are 40” long and would be perfect for this project.

GAUGE:

Garter stitch with US size 10.5 needles: 12 stitches & 22 rows (11 garter ridges) = 4”

Take time to check gauge by casting on 25 stitches and knit every row (garter stitch) for at least 6”.  A different gauge may require more more (or less) yarn and impact finished size.

If your gauge swatch has fewer than 12 stitches per 4”… try one needle size smaller.

If your gauge swatch has more than 12 stitches per 4”… try one needle size larger.
