The Game Time blanket will keep you warm and cozy while watching your favorite sports team or reading a book on a chilly winter night.

Whether your style is modern, traditional, farmhouse or vintage, pick your favorite yarn color and this chunky blanket will add interesting texture to your home.

This reversible blanket knits up quickly with super bulky #6 weight yarn.

The design features an easy 4-row stitch pattern that uses only knit and purl stitches - making it a great project for confident beginners or experienced knitters.

For the blanket shown here, I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick super bulky in the ‘Mustard’ colorway. The blanket will work well with almost any colorway including multi-color tweed yards.

As of November 2021, this pattern has a rating of 5 out of 5 stars on Ravelry for both clarity and overall results.

If you prefer worsted weight yarn, please see the Quality Time Blanket knitting pattern or my collection of blanket knitting patterns designed for worsted weight yarn.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CHUNKY SCARF AND SIX BLANKET SIZES:

Scarf: 8.5” wide x 64” long
XS Lap Blanket: 30.5” wide x 38” long
Small Blanket: 38” wide x 42.5” long
Medium Throw: 41” wide x 45” long
Large Throw: 44” wide x 49” long
XL Afghan: 47.5” wide x 54.5” long
XXL Afghan: 51.5” wide x 57” long

It’s easy to make any of the blanket sizes longer by adding additional pattern repeats. The pattern includes estimates of how much yarn is needed to add length to each blanket size.

The blanket shown in the photos is the Medium size blanket.  It measures about 41" wide and 45" long.

SUPER BULKY #6 WEIGHT YARN:

This pattern is designed for use with super bulky yarn… knit single strand on US 15 knitting needles.

Amount of yarn needed for each size:

Scarf: 205 - 225 yards
XS Lap Blanket: 500 - 530 yards
Small Blanket: 710 - 740 yards
Medium Throw: 800 - 840 yards
Large Throw: 970 - 1020 yards
XL Afghan: 1200 - 1250 yards
XXL Afghan: 1350 - 1450 yards

Be sure to purchase additional yarn if you plan to add length to your project.  The pattern includes estimates on how much additional yarn is required to add pattern repeats.

This blanket is chunky, cozy and very easy to knit! And, it’s completely reversible.

SUPER BULKY YARN SUGGESTIONS:

For best appearance, use a super bulky yarn with good stitch definition. Chenille yarns are not the best option for this pattern because the stitch definition is too soft.

I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in the color 'Mustard' for the medium throw blanket and ‘Pumpkin’ for the scarf (see later in this blog post).  This yarn is 20% wool and 80% acrylic. It has a lovely, soft woolly texture with fantastic stitch definition.  Some of my favorites solid colorways for home décor projects are ‘Denim’, ‘Cilantro’, ‘Thaw’, ‘Slate’ and ‘Peanut’. Solid colorways have 106 yards per skein.

The Game Time blanket pattern will also work well with Wool-Ease Thick & Quick tweed colorways including ‘Fossil’ (a blend of cream, taupe and sand colors) and ‘Seaglass’ (a blend of cream, brown, ice blue and jade colorways). Note that the multi-color and tweed colorways have 87 yards per skein.

The best place to find the full selection of Wool-Ease Thick & Quick color choices is on the Lion Brand website.

This blanket would also look wonderful knit with Lion Brand Hometown super bulky. It’s 100% acrylic and very soft with great stitch definition. If you prefer a yarn without wool this is my favorite option.

There are many pretty colorways available in Hometown super bulky including: 'Dallas Grey' (it’s a truly neutral, medium gray that I have used several times including with my Over the Rooftops blanket knitting pattern and Westport Blanket knitting pattern), ‘Tampa Spice’ (rich brick red), ‘Slatington Slate’ (dark gray), ‘Lakeland Olive’, ‘Washington Denim’ and ‘Hoboken Honey’. Note: Solid colorways of Hometown super bulky have 81 yards per skein and “print”, heathered or multi-color options have 64 yards per skein.

LION BRAND BLANKET KNITTING KIT:

Game Time blanket is available as a kit on LionBrand.com. The kit includes a PDF digital pattern and all the super bulky yarn needed to make your choice of one of three blanket sizes. Pick your preferred yarn color from Wool-Ease Thick & Quick collection.

NOTE: The PDF pattern included with the kit has instructions for the three smallest blanket sizes only.

Fast and fun! This is one of Mary Lee’s great, easy to read and follow patterns. The Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick yarn is perfect for this pattern and makes a soft, comfy blanket that knits up fast and looks terrific!

CALCULATE AMOUNT OF YARN NEEDED:

To calculate the amount of yarn needed you will need to know:

  1. What size blanket (or scarf) you would like to make.

  2. Total yardage needed for project size. See the PDF pattern or the list above under ‘Super Bulky Yarn’.

  3. Yardage for each skein of yarn. See notes above about yarn options.

For example:

  1. Size for project: Large Throw (44” wide x 49” long)

  2. Total yardage required = 970 - 1020 yards

  3. Wool-Ease Thick & Quick Solid Colorways = 106 yards per skein

    OR

Wool-Ease Thick & Quick Tweed Colorways = 87 yards per skein

The math looks like this…

For Solid Colorways of Wool-Ease Thick & Quick:

1020 yards divided by 106 yards per skein = 9.62 skeins of yarn

Round 9.62 up and purchase 10 skeins to make the Large Throw. (Purchase more if you would like to make the blanket longer.)

For Tweed or Multi-Color Colorways of Wool-Ease Thick & Quick:

1020 yards divided by 87 yards per skein = 11.72 skeins of yarn

Round 11.72 up and purchase at least 12 skeins of yarn to make the Large Throw. (Purchase more if you would like to make the blanket longer.)

This blanket is easy to knit blanket pattern for a confident knitter. The pattern uses only knit and purl stitches.

KNITTING NEEDLES:

The scarf can be knit with US 15 straight knitting needles.

The blanket is knit flat, in one piece on US 15 circular needles. Circular knitting needles are necessary to accommodate the large number of stitches for a blanket. Read my blog post on this topic if you need more information.

The Game Time pattern includes instructions for a warm, chunky scarf. The scarf shown here was made with Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in the ‘Pumpkin’ colorway. Click here to purchase the pattern.

EASY TO KNIT:

The Game Time Blanket & Scarf pattern is easy to knit for a confident knitter. If you know how to knit and purl, and change back and forth from one to the other confidently then you probably have the skills to knit this blanket.

You will need to know how to cast on stitches, knit and purl confidently, read a row by row knitting pattern, bind off stitches and weave in ends.
